How to Lower Cholesterol Naturally

Cholesterol varies with age. Cholesterol can go up and down based on many factors, including diet. Many people find they have a harder time managing cholesterol as they age. There are two numbers associated with cholesterol, LDL and HDL. HDL refers to high density lipoproteins, and LDL refers to low-density lipoprotein. The LDL is considered the “bad” cholesterol, or the level of cholesterol that most people want to lower.

When measuring cholesterol, ideally it is best to have a ratio of higher HDL to LDL. The best way to lower cholesterol naturally is to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Here are some additional tips for lowering cholesterol.

· Set a target. Consider how much you want to lower your cholesterol by. This will motivate you to eat better and get the amount of exercise that you need to in order to get your cholesterol level into a healthy range. Lifestyle modifications are more likely to happen once you set a target cholesterol rate.

· Start exercising. Exercise is one of the best cholesterol busters available. Exercise is also a tool for raising the levels of good or HDL cholesterol in the body. Some studies suggest that exercise may raise good cholesterol by as much as 10 percent. You can exercise simply by walking for 30 to 45 minutes after you eat. Then try more vigorous activity after your body becomes more accustomed to moving.

· Avoid fatty foods. Foods high in saturated fat are going to elevate your cholesterol levels, particularly your level of LDL. When possible eat lean proteins, and foods that are unsaturated or mono-unsaturated. Stay away from foods that are high in dietary cholesterol, although you can try these in moderation.

· Pack on fiber. Fiber is an excellent tool for lowering cholesterol. Good choices include whole grains, leafy vegetables and fruits.

What are Statins?

Statins are a type of medication that are most often prescribed to lower blood cholesterol. These drugs can be used to act on the liver.

Cholesterol is often seen as something that is negative; however it is actually a necessary part of the body’s cell and normal body functions. While high levels of cholesterol are bad and can lead to many diseases including atherosclerosis and heart disease, normal or low levels of cholesterol are quite ordinary and to be expected.

If you have been diagnosed with high cholesterol, many symptoms may follow or accompany your diagnosis, including chest pain. Statins may be prescribed to lower the risk of increasing chest pain, and cardiovascular symptoms or disease including heart attacks and stroke.

Statins include several different categories. These are fluvastatin, rosuvastatin, mevastatin and lovastatin to name a few. Most are sold under various brand names. Statins can also be naturally occurring, including Mevastatin which is a naturally occurring form of statin that you can find in red yeast rice.

Statins may have other benefits apart from reducing levels of blood cholesterol. A study published by the Mayo Clinic found that statins may help reduce the risk of esophageal cancer. While there are some risks associated with taking statins, as with any medication, the benefits of taking statins in many cases outweigh the risks.

Statins work by preventing an enzyme in the body called HMG-CoA reductase from producing added cholesterol in the body. The statin replaces this enzyme in the body, so that cholesterol production is slowed down. Additional factors that may help with cholesterol reduction include eating a healthy diet that incorporates many fruits and vegetables, and eating low-cholesterol foods. Sometimes diet is not as much of a factor as genetics. Your healthcare provider can work with you to determine the best course of action in reducing your total cholesterol.

Possible Causes for Acne

People get acne for many different reasons. No two people are alike. Many different types of acne also exist. However, some standard causes do exist for basic types of acne. Here is a list of the most common causes for acne. This may help you overcome and treat acne.

  • Food. The type of food that you eat may contribute to acne. In fact, eating foods containing too much sugar, or consuming too many dairy products, may lead to acne breakouts. This is particularly true if you tend to have breakouts on your chin, or along your jawline. If you find this is a problem, curb your intake of sugar and dairy products and see if your acne subsides.
  • Stress. Stress is a common cause for many health problems, including acne. If you find you have breakouts more commonly during stress, or following stressful events, it may help to engage in stress reduction techniques. Stress can increase levels of certain hormones in the body, which can impact acne and result in more oil production in the body.
  • Using new detergents or soaps. Sometimes simply switching the type of soap you use, or detergents that you clean your laundry with, can lead to irritation and breakouts. If you find a sudden outbreak bothering you, it may be nothing more than switching the brand of soap that you use. Switching back to your ordinary brand may help alleviate your problem. Your body may also adapt to the new brand you have chosen with time.
  • Sleeping with makeup on. It is important that you always wash your face and never go to bed with makeup on. This is a sure way to get an acne breakout. If you want to avoid acne, always wash your face in the morning, and before bed, particularly if you wear makeup.
